Highlights
■Utagawa Hiroshige “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”
This MEGURU features the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, which brought Utagawa Hiroshige, the leading ukiyo-e artist, into the limelight. Hiroshige's skillful depiction of the changing seasons, climate, and time of day, as well as his emotionally rich depictions of landscapes interwoven with everyday people and nature must have been undoubtedly appealing to all in Edo, as well as the viewers today. In this MEGURU, the collection features 42 of the 55 prints.
■Shin-Hanga / lit. New Prints
The popularity and demand for Ukiyo-e prints gradually decreased after Edo era, but the influx of Western photography and printing technology contributed to the resurgence of printing art. Led by print publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo, the new art movement, Shin-Hanga / lit. New Prints revived the long forgotten artform by incorporating the traditional woodblock print techniques of the Edo period and new sensibility that resulted in refined colors and lyrical landscapes. In this collection, we will present some of the major Shin-Hanga artists including Kawase Hasui, Yoshida Hiroshi, Kasamatsu Shiro, and others.
